What Was the Jefferson Davis Memorial?
The Jefferson Davis Memorial was a monument built to honor Jefferson Davis. He was the only president of the Confederate States of America. This was a group of southern states that separated from the United States between 1861 and 1865. The memorial was located on Monument Avenue in Richmond, Virginia.
How It Looked
The monument was first shown to the public on June 3, 1907. It had a tall column, about 65 feet high. This column was in a style called Doric, which is a classic Greek design. On top of the column was a bronze statue named Vindicatrix. This name means "she who vindicates" or "defender."
Around the main column, there were thirteen smaller columns. Eleven of these had bronze seals (like official stamps) that stood for the states that left the United States. The other two seals represented states that sent soldiers to fight for the Confederacy.
The bronze statues, Vindicatrix and Jefferson Davis, were designed by an artist named Edward Virginius Valentine. The whole setup was planned by William C. Noland. The monument also had words carved into it from a speech Jefferson Davis gave.
Why the Monument Was Removed
In June 2020, many protests happened across the United States. These protests were about the death of George Floyd. During these events, people in Richmond, Virginia, tore down the bronze statue of Jefferson Davis on June 10, 2020.
The rest of the monument was also removed later. On July 8, 2020, the City of Richmond took down the Vindicatrix statue from the top of the central column. Most of the memorial was taken apart and removed on that day.
