History of Jefferson Township
Jefferson Township was first created in 1837 by the state government. It was originally called Florida Township. Later, in 1849, its name was changed to Jefferson Township.
Communities in Jefferson Township
Jefferson Township is home to several smaller communities. Here are some of them:
- Florida was an early settlement in the township. It even had a post office from 1839 until 1861.
- Fountain Park is a small, unofficial community within the township.
- Osseo is another unofficial community. It's located along M-34, a state highway.
- Pittsford is an unofficial community that sits right on the edge of Jefferson Township and Pittsford Township.
- Shadyside is also an unofficial community found within the township.
Geography and Nature
Jefferson Township covers a total area of about 36.10 square miles (93.50 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 35.49 square miles (91.92 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.61 square miles (1.58 square kilometers), is water.
Natural Areas
A large part of the Lost Nation State Game Area is located in Jefferson Township. This protected area is about 2,471 acres (10 square kilometers) in size. It's a great place for nature and wildlife. People sometimes call it the Pittsford State Game Area.
Main Roads in the Township
Two important state highways pass through Jefferson Township:
- M-34 enters the township from the east. It ends where it meets M-99.
- M-99 comes into the township from the northwest and turns south where it connects with M-34.

In 2000, there were 3,141 people living in Jefferson Township. These people lived in 1,210 households, and 895 of those were families.
