Jeffersonville is a small village in Wayne County, Illinois, United States. In 2020, about 355 people lived there.

Even though its official name is Jeffersonville, most people in the area call it Geff. You'll see "Geff" on road signs, at the post office, and in many official papers. The name "Geff" sounds like "Jeff". It's believed the railroad changed the name in the 1800s. This was to avoid confusing it with Jeffersonville, Indiana, another town with a similar name.

History of Geff Village

The area around Geff has a long history. Early settlers like Burton Hawk and his brother ran a sawmill nearby. William Edwin Hawk was married to Alice Mathews. His sister, Mary Adeline, married Dr. Dade A. Hilliard.

Mellie Ann Gray, daughter of Thomas and Rebecca Gray, married Burton Hawk in 1894. Burton and William's parents, Eliza Jane and David Hawk, owned a general store. After David passed away in 1916, their son Hamby took over the store. Later, many family members moved to other towns in Illinois.

David Hawk was known as a "Dealer in Staple and Fancy Groceries." He started his grocery business in Jeffersonville in March 1901. His store was the only one of its kind in town. He made sure to stock everything people needed.
