Jennifer Hartt Elisseeff (/əˈlsiɛf/; born September 25, 1973) is an American scientist. She is a biomedical engineer and an ophthalmologist. This means she helps design medical tools and also studies eyes. She is a top professor at Johns Hopkins University. Her work focuses on regenerative medicine and immunoengineering. These fields aim to help the body heal itself.

Dr. Elisseeff is a member of several important groups. These include the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. She also received the NIH Director's Pioneer Award in 2019. This award is given to scientists doing very creative research.

Her Amazing Education

Jennifer Elisseeff first studied chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University. She focused on how different materials, called polymers, are made. After that, she went to the Harvard–MIT Program of Health Sciences and Technology. There, she earned her advanced degree. Her mentor was a famous scientist named Robert S. Langer.

Later, she worked at the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. She was part of a special program there. She also spent time at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.

In 2003, Dr. Elisseeff joined Johns Hopkins University. She started as an assistant professor. She worked in both biomedical engineering and orthopedic surgery. Orthopedic surgery deals with bones and joints. She became a full professor in 2010. Today, she is the Morton Goldberg Professor. She also leads her own research lab at Johns Hopkins.

In 2018, she was chosen for the National Academy of Engineering. This was for her work on special injectable materials. These materials help the body heal itself. In the same year, she also joined the National Academy of Medicine.

Helping People with Science

Dr. Elisseeff's main research group is at Johns Hopkins University. It is called the Translational Tissue Engineering Center. They work on tissue engineering, eye health, and immunology. Tissue engineering is about creating new tissues. Immunology is the study of the body's immune system.

Since 2016, much of her research has focused on the immune system. They study how the immune system reacts to materials placed inside the body. They also look at how these materials affect healing. This research helps create better ways to repair damaged body parts.

Building Companies

Besides her university work, Dr. Elisseeff has also started companies. In 2004, she helped create Cartilix, Inc. This company was later bought by Biomet Inc in 2009. In 2009, she also started two other companies. These were Aegeria Soft Tissue and Tissue Repair.

She also advises other companies. She helps them with their scientific plans. She has served on the boards of companies like Bausch and Lomb. She also helped the State of Maryland's Technology Development Corporation. This group helps new technology businesses grow.
