Jennings River facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Jennings River is a cool river in northern British Columbia, Canada. It's about 150 kilometers (or 93 miles) long. This river got its name from William T. Jennings. He was an engineer who, back in 1897, checked out different ways to build roads and railroads from the Pacific Ocean to the Yukon.

Where the Jennings River Flows

The Jennings River starts high up in the northern Stikine Ranges. These ranges are part of the big Cassiar Mountains. At first, the river flows southwest. Then, it turns northeast near the Tuya Range. It eventually flows into the southern part of Teslin Lake. The Teslin River and the Hayes River also join the lake in the same area.

The lower part of the Jennings River helps form the edge of the Nisutlin Plateau. This plateau stretches north into the Yukon. It runs along the eastern side of Teslin Lake. Simpson Peak is a mountain in this area. It stands tall above the lower Jennings River.

Plants and Animals Along the River

The area around the Jennings River is home to many plants and animals. One important tree you'll find here is the Black spruce. This type of spruce tree is very common in the river's watershed. The Jennings River area is actually one of the westernmost places where Black Spruce trees grow.
