Jeremiah J. Hamilton (born July 1, 1838 – died 1905) was an important leader in Texas. He helped start schools, worked as a carpenter, organized political groups, and served in the government.
He was born into a system where people were treated as property on July 1, 1838, in Tennessee. He was later brought to Texas in 1847.

Early Life and Community Work
Helping His Community
Jeremiah J. Hamilton worked hard to support his community. In March 1866, he became the secretary for the Texas State Central Committee of Colored Men. This group worked to improve life for African Americans in Texas.
Founding a School
In the summer of 1866, Hamilton did something very important. He started a school in Bastrop, Texas, for black students of all ages. This was a big step because many schools were not open to everyone at that time.
Political Career
Serving in Government
Jeremiah J. Hamilton was a member of the Republican Party. He was elected to serve in the Texas government. From February 9, 1870, to January 14, 1873, he was a Representative in the 12th Legislature.
He represented both Fayette County, Texas and Bastrop County. As a Representative, he helped make laws for the state of Texas.

Building a Landmark
In 1871, Jeremiah J. Hamilton built a special building known as the Hamilton House. It has a unique triangular shape and is located at Symphony Square in Austin. This building is still standing today and is part of the Austin Symphony Orchestra's Symphony Square.
