Jeri Brown is an amazing American jazz singer, songwriter, and a professor. She was born in Missouri in 1952.

Jeri Brown's Early Life and Music

Jeri Brown grew up in St. Louis. She first sang in public when she was only six years old! Later, she studied classical singing in Iowa. She performed in the central United States and in Europe.

After finishing her studies, Jeri lived in Cleveland. There, she worked with the Cleveland Chamber Orchestra. She also performed with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. In Ohio, she sang with drummer Bob McKee's band. These experiences led her to work with famous artists. Some of these included Ellis Marsalis, Billy Taylor, and Dizzy Gillespie.

Jeri Brown's Jazz Career

Jeri Brown then focused on the jazz music scene in Cleveland. She sang many well-known jazz standard songs. She also wrote lyrics for songs. She worked with composers like Henry Butler, Kenny Wheeler, and Cyrus Chestnut.

In 1991, Jeri Brown signed with Justin Time, a Canadian record label. Her first album with them was Mirage. On this album, she sang with pianist Fred Hersch. In 1992, she recorded Unfolding The Peacocks. This album featured Kirk Lightsey and Peter Leitch. It included famous jazz songs like "If You Could See Me Now" and "Woody N' You".

In 1998, Jeri worked on the album Zaius. She sang with great musicians like David Murray and John Hicks. She performed classics such as "Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise". Later that year, she made another album, I've Got Your Number, with the same band and Leon Thomas.

Jeri Brown as a Teacher

Besides singing, Jeri Brown is also a dedicated teacher. She taught music at several universities in Ohio. These included the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Cleveland State University, and the University of Akron. She also taught at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

In 1989, Jeri Brown moved to Canada. In the 1990s, she taught at Concordia University and McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. She taught about jazz history, how to improvise, and vocal techniques. She also worked as an artist-in-residence at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia.

Jeri Brown has received special awards for her achievements. One of them is the Martin Luther King Jr. Achievement Award.
