Jeronimo Bassano facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jeronimo Bassano was an Italian musician from the Republic of Venice. He was the head of a very musical family! Many of his sons became famous musicians too. Five of his sons, including Anthony and John, moved from Venice to England. They worked for King Henry VIII and played instruments like the recorder. Jeronimo himself stayed in Venice. He was known as a "Maestro" (master) of trumpets and shawms (an old wind instrument). Some people think he was the grandfather of another famous musician, Giovanni Bassano.

About Jeronimo Bassano

Jeronimo was the son of Baptista "Piva" from Bassano del Grappa. This town is about 35 miles away from Venice. His father, Baptista, was also a musician. He played the piva, which is a type of small bagpipe.

Jeronimo's grandfather was Andrea de Crespano. Andrea came from a village called Crespano, which was near Bassano. Both Andrea, Baptista, and Jeronimo were known for being musicians. They also made musical instruments.

His Life in Venice

Around the early 1500s, Jeronimo moved from Bassano to Venice. In Venice, he was called "Maestro Hieronimo." He played the piffero (a type of wind instrument) for the Doge of Venice. The Doge was the leader of Venice at that time. Jeronimo worked for the Doge between 1506 and 1512.

Some historians have discussed the Bassano family's background. In the past, some believed the family might have been Jewish. However, more recent research suggests that the Bassanos who moved to England were not of Jewish origin. This research was done by Giulio M. Ongaro and Alessio Ruffatti.
