Jerry Bittle (October 8, 1949 – April 9, 2003) was an American cartoonist. He was well-known for creating two popular comic strips: Geech and Shirley and Son. His comics were enjoyed by many readers across the country.
Jerry Bittle's Early Life and Career
Jerry Bittle was born in Wichita, Kansas, on October 8, 1949. His father worked as a barber. Jerry grew up in Kansas and later attended Wichita State University.
After college, Jerry began his career as an editorial cartoonist. He drew cartoons that shared opinions about news and events. He worked for newspapers like the Wichita Eagle and the Albuquerque Tribune.
In 1978, Jerry moved to Dallas, Texas. There, he started working as a freelance artist. This meant he worked for himself and took on different art projects.
Creating Popular Comic Strips
Jerry Bittle launched his first major comic strip, Geech, in 1982. This comic strip quickly became very popular. It was published in many newspapers across the country. Geech continued to run in syndication until Jerry's death in 2003.
In 2000, Jerry started another comic strip called Shirley and Son. This strip focused on a family's life after a divorce. Like Geech, Shirley and Son also ended when Jerry passed away.
Remembering Jerry Bittle
Jerry Bittle died on April 9, 2003. He passed away from a heart attack while on vacation in Honduras.
After his death, Jerry Bittle's family created something special to remember him. They founded the Jerry Bittle Educational Trust. This trust helps support education in his memory.
