College Star at Utah
Jerry Chambers became a college basketball star at the University of Utah. He played for the Utah Utes from 1963 to 1966. In 1966, he won a very special award. He was named the NCAA basketball tournament Most Outstanding Player. This was amazing because his team, the Runnin' Utes, finished fourth in the tournament that year.
Jerry Chambers is the only player ever to win this award while his team placed fourth. He scored a lot of points in the tournament. He scored 143 points in just four games, which is still an NCAA Tournament record! In the Final Four games, he scored 70 points. He had 38 points against the team that won the championship, Texas-Western. He also scored 32 points in the third-place game against the Duke Blue Devils.
During his time at Utah, Jerry Chambers was great at scoring and getting rebounds. He averaged 24.6 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. In his final year (1965–1966), he averaged 28.8 points and 11.6 rebounds. His 892 points in that season are the second-highest ever for a Utah player.
Playing Pro Basketball
After college, Jerry Chambers played professional basketball. He played for four seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was with the Los Angeles Lakers (1966–1967), Phoenix Suns (1969–1970), Atlanta Hawks (1970–1971), and Buffalo Braves (1971–1972).
He then played two seasons in the American Basketball Association (ABA). He was a member of the San Diego Conquistadors (1972–1973) and the San Antonio Spurs (1973–1974).
His best season was with the San Diego Conquistadors. He averaged 11.9 points and 4.4 rebounds per game that year. Jerry Chambers missed the 1967–1968 and 1968–1969 seasons because he was serving in the military.
In 1968, Jerry Chambers was part of a big trade in NBA history. The Lakers traded him, along with two other players, to the Philadelphia 76ers. In return, the Lakers received the famous player Wilt Chamberlain. Jerry Chambers never actually played for the 76ers. They traded him to the Phoenix Suns shortly after.
