Jerry Richard Louis Marion (born August 7, 1944) is a former American football player. He played as an end for one season with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the National Football League (NFL). The Steelers picked him in the 1966 NFL draft after he played college football at the University of Wyoming.
Growing Up and College Football
Jerry Richard Louis Marion was born on August 7, 1944. His hometown is Bakersfield, California. He went to Bakersfield High School in Bakersfield.
After high school, Jerry played for the Wyoming Cowboys college team. He was part of the team from 1963 to 1966. He was a "letterman" for three years, from 1964 to 1966. This means he played well enough to earn a special award, like a letter, for his sport.
Playing Professional Football
In 1966, Jerry Marion was chosen by two professional football teams. The Pittsburgh Steelers picked him in the tenth round of the 1966 NFL draft. The Boston Patriots also chose him in the 11th round of the 1966 AFL Redshirt draft. A "draft" is when professional teams take turns picking new players from colleges.
Jerry started his pro career with the Wheeling Ironmen. This team was part of the Continental Football League (COFL) in 1967. That year, he caught 28 passes for 358 yards. He also scored five touchdowns. He returned eight punts for 85 yards too.
In the 1967 NFL season, Jerry played seven games for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He caught one pass for 16 yards. He also returned one punt for two yards.
After his time with the Steelers, he went back to the Ironmen. The team was renamed the Ohio Valley Ironmen in 1968. He had a great year, catching 17 passes for 225 yards. He scored three touchdowns from catches. He also ran the ball three times for 52 yards and one touchdown. Jerry was also good at returning kicks and punts. He returned 23 punts for 300 yards and one touchdown. He returned 29 kicks for 679 yards and two touchdowns. He even made one interception while playing defense. In 1969, he caught 24 passes for 372 yards and one touchdown. He also returned five kicks for 104 yards.
In 1970, Jerry Marion played for the Indianapolis Capitols. This team was in the Atlantic Coast Football League. He caught 20 passes for 464 yards and three touchdowns. He also returned 24 punts for 277 yards and three touchdowns. Plus, he returned 17 kicks for 456 yards.
