John Webber "Jerry" Turner (born January 17, 1954) is a retired American professional baseball player. He was an outfielder who played in the Major Leagues from 1974 to 1983. Jerry spent most of his career with the San Diego Padres. He played for them from 1974 to 1981, and again in 1983. Jerry Turner threw and batted left-handed. He was 5 feet 9 inches (175 cm) tall and weighed 180 pounds (82 kg).

Early Life and Baseball Start

Jerry Turner was born on January 17, 1954. His hometown was Texarkana, Arkansas. He grew up in Los Angeles, California. Jerry went to Venice High School.

After high school, the San Diego Padres picked him. This happened in the 1972 Major League Baseball draft. He was their tenth pick that year.

Journey to the Major Leagues

Jerry Turner first joined the Major Leagues in September 1974. Before that, he played really well in the minor leagues. For the Double-A Alexandria Aces, he had a great batting average of .326. He also hit 18 home runs and had 68 runs batted in (RBIs). He made 154 hits that season.

The next year, he played for the Triple-A Hawaii Islanders. He batted .329 and had 91 RBIs. This led to another chance in the Major Leagues late in the season.

Major League Career

Jerry Turner then played seven full seasons in the Major Leagues. He was the main left fielder for the San Diego Padres in 1976 and 1979.

He also played for other teams. In 1981, he played ten games for the Chicago White Sox. In 1982, he played 85 games for the Detroit Tigers. He returned to the Padres for his final season in 1983.
