Jerusalem (which was first called New Jerusalem) is a small area, or suburb, located near the town of Kadina. You can find it on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. A Look Back: Jerusalem's History
How Jerusalem Began
Jerusalem was first surveyed in 1871. This happened because many people needed homes. These people worked at the nearby Wallaroo Mines. Jerusalem was one of four special "occupation blocks" created for housing.
One old resident said that Jerusalem was meant for "gentleman's residences." This meant it was planned for more important or wealthy people. A local leader named Councillor Rosenberg supposedly suggested the name Jerusalem for this "aristocratic suburb."
Early Challenges and Community Spirit
In 1874, a local newspaper thought the name "Jerusalem" didn't quite fit the place. They said it often sounded "ridiculous" to new visitors. At the time, a local minister noted that the area faced some social challenges.
Building Community: Churches and Sports
Despite early challenges, the community started to grow. A Bible Christian chapel opened in Jerusalem in February 1874. This chapel became a central part of the community.
Sports were also important! The main Jerusalem football team joined the Kadina club in 1908. Later, in the 1920s, the "Jews" football and cricket teams played in local Kadina competitions.
A new church, the Jerusalem Methodist Church, opened in January 1922. It was built by volunteers on land given by the Wallaroo and Kadina Mining Company. The Jerusalem Sunday School started in March of the same year. Before the church opened, a group called the Wallaroo Mines Gospel Mission Band held meetings in the area for three years. Today, this church is still active as the Jerusalem Uniting Church.
