Jerusalem City Hall facts for kids
The Jerusalem City Hall is a group of buildings where the city's government works. It is located in a special place called Safra Square. This modern complex was built right next to the old city hall. It sits on a corner of Jaffa Street, a busy road that connects the Old City with the Russian Compound.
In 1950, the city government of Jerusalem decided it needed a new, bigger building. They wanted a place that could handle all the city's important work. Many different building plans were suggested over the years. Finally, in 1986, a plan was chosen. Construction started in 1988. A special ceremony was held at the old city hall to mark the beginning of the new building. In 1993, the new city hall complex officially opened. The mayor at the time, Teddy Kollek, and other important leaders were there for the opening.
