Jewel Hairston Bronaugh is an American government official. She was the 14th United States Deputy Secretary of Agriculture. This means she was a very important leader in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. She helped make sure America's farms and food systems worked well.

Before this big role, she was the 16th Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. She held this job from 2018 to 2021. Jewel Bronaugh is also special because she is the first African-American person to be the Deputy Secretary of Agriculture.

Early Life and School

Jewel Bronaugh grew up in Petersburg, Virginia. She went to James Madison University and earned a bachelor's degree in education. This means she studied how to teach.

Later, she continued her studies at Virginia Tech. There, she earned two more degrees: a master's degree in education and a doctorate. Her doctorate was in career and technical education.

Her Career Journey

In 2001, Jewel Bronaugh started working at Virginia State University (VSU). She was a professor there.

Leading at Virginia State University

For five years, Bronaugh was the dean of the VSU College of Agriculture. A dean is a leader in a college. After that, she became the executive director of the VSU Center for Agricultural Research, Engagement and Outreach (CAREO). This center helps with farm research and community programs.

Working for Virginia's Farms

In 2018, the Governor of Virginia, Ralph Northam, chose her for a new job. She became the 16th Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. In this role, she helped manage farming and consumer protection for the state of Virginia.

National Role in Agriculture

In January 2021, Joe Biden, who was about to become president, picked her for a very important national job. He nominated her to be the United States Deputy Secretary of Agriculture.

The Senate had to approve her for this job. They confirmed her by a "voice vote" on May 13, 2021. This means they voted by saying "aye" or "nay" out loud. She officially started her new role on May 17, 2021.

On January 26, 2023, the Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, announced that Jewel Bronaugh would be leaving her position.
