Jewelpet (Japanese: ジュエルペット, Hepburn: Juerupetto) is a popular Japanese series of toys and stories. It was created in 2008 by Sanrio and Sega Toys. The series features cute animals named after jewels, birthstones, and minerals. These special pets can use magic with their unique "Jewel Eyes."
The idea for Jewelpet came from Yuko Yamaguchi, who also designed Hello Kitty. The characters were drawn by Miyuki Okumura, known for Cinnamoroll. Because Jewelpet became very successful, it expanded to other countries. An Italian company, Giochi Preziosi, helps bring Jewelpet to Europe. The official slogan for Jewelpet is: "Eyes of Jewel that Shine, glittering with Luck and Good Fortune."

Exploring Jewel Land
The world of Jewelpet is called Jewel Land. It is a magical place that sparkles like jewels. In this world, special animals called Jewelpets live. Each Jewelpet has unique magical Jewel Eyes. These eyes help them use magic.
Becoming a Magician
Jewelpets need human partners to awaken their magic. Together, they study magic at a special school in Jewel Land. This training helps them become master magicians. It is a tough journey with many challenges. As human partners care for their Jewelpets, the pets grow stronger. They also learn to love their partners back.
When a Jewelpet becomes a master magician, they receive a magical Jewel Cloak. This cloak is a symbol of their magical skills. It shows they have completed their training.
The History of Jewelpet
The Jewelpet series first started on January 15, 2008. It was a joint project between Sanrio and Sega Toys. When it first launched, there were 33 different Jewelpet characters. These toys were very popular. They even came with special passwords to connect to an online world.
Growth and New Characters
In 2009, the first Jewelpet anime TV series began. By 2010, over 600 different Jewelpet products were available. More companies started making Jewelpet items. New Jewelpets were also introduced, like Labra in March 2010.
The characters also started appearing at Sanrio Puroland. This is a theme park where fans can meet their favorite Sanrio characters. New Jewelpets like Angela, Charotte, and Jasper debuted in December 2010. Charotte and Jasper were even designed by fans in a contest!
Changes and Celebrations
In 2011, a new website called Jewel Land Online replaced the old Webgurumi site. More new characters, called Sweetspets, were also introduced. Sakuran was one of these, also designed by a fan.
By 2012, more Jewelpets like Coal and Granite joined the group. The first Jewelpet movie, Jewelpet the Movie: Sweets Dance Princess, was released in August 2012. In 2014, the 41st Jewelpet, Luea, was revealed. The 42nd character, Larimar, debuted later that year.
The Jewelpet musicals at Sanrio Puroland ended in 2016. By July 2017, the characters were less featured at the park. This was due to the rising popularity of another anime series, Rilu Rilu Fairilu.
In 2019, the Jewelpet series celebrated its 10th anniversary. All seven anime series were re-released on YouTube for a limited time. A new stage show also premiered at the 2019 Tokyo Toy Show.
