Jiří Wolker (born March 29, 1900 – died January 3, 1924) was a famous Czech poet. He also worked as a journalist and wrote plays. He was one of the people who helped start the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in 1921.

Life of Jiří Wolker

Jiří Wolker was born in Prostějov, a city in what was then Austria-Hungary. He grew up in a family that loved culture and art. He went to a high school in Prostějov.

After finishing high school, he moved to Prague. There, he studied law at the university. At the same time, he also went to interesting lectures about art and literature. He was very close to a group of Czech artists called Devětsil. This group focused on new and experimental art.

Sadly, Jiří Wolker suffered from a serious lung disease. He died from tuberculosis when he was only 23 years old.

Main Works

Jiří Wolker wrote several important books. Most of his work was poetry.

  • Host do domu (1921): This was a book of his poems.
  • Proletářské umění (1922): This title means "Proletarian Art."
  • Těžká hodina (1922): This is another book of his poetry. The cover for the first edition was designed by the famous Czech painter Josef Čapek.
  • Tři hry (1923): This book contained three plays he wrote. These plays are not as well-known as his poems.
  • Do boje, lásko, leť: This means "Into Battle, Love, Fly."
