Early Life and Dreams
Jiang Wenli grew up in a well-off family. Her dad, Jiang Peiji, was a railroad engineer. Her mom worked as a telephone operator for the railroad. Both of her parents loved books and art, which influenced her a lot. She is the youngest of three sisters. Her older sister is Jiang Wenjuan.
From a young age, her father taught her to enjoy famous books, paintings, and songs. When she was 5, she dreamed of becoming a gymnast. Her mother sent her to study dance and gymnastics. However, she was not tall enough for the Bengbu city gymnastics team. She still practiced for five years as an unofficial member.
At 17, she wanted to go to a normal university. But her score was a bit too low. So, she was accepted by a water conservation school instead. In 1986, she graduated and started working at the Bengbu City Water Company. Her job was to design ways to transport water for people. But she wasn't happy with this life. In 1988, she decided to move to Beijing to start fresh.
Her niece, Ma Sichun, who is her sister Jiang Wenjuan's daughter, is also a well-known actress today.
Becoming a Star Actress
Jiang Wenli got into the Beijing Film Academy without much preparation. After she became a student, many film companies wanted her to act in their movies. After this, she played a character named Shuixiu in the movie Li Li Yuan Shang Cao. This film won an award at a French film festival. Her last movie during college was The Story of Xing Hua. In it, she played a girl named Xing Hua. After graduating, she lived in America for a while before coming back to China to continue her acting career.
When she returned to China, Jiang acted in Miaomiao Liu's movie The Story of Xinghua. In 1993, she played an important role as Chengyi's mother in the movie Farewell My Concubine. This film won the Best Movie Award at the Cannes Film Festival that year.
In 1999, Jiang starred in a 20-episode TV show called Lead by the Hand. For her amazing acting, she won the Best Actress award from both the Golden Eagle Awards and the Flying Apsaras Awards. These are two of China's highest honors for television. In 2000, she won the Best Actress award from the Huabiao Film Awards for her role in the film Female Coach & Male Player.
