Jim Agnew was born on March 21, 1966. He is a Canadian who used to play professional hockey as a defenceman.

Jim Agnew was known as a "stay-at-home" defenceman. This means he focused on defending his team's goal. He was also a strong player who wasn't afraid to be physical. The Vancouver Canucks picked him in the eighth round of the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. He was the 157th player chosen overall. Before joining the pros, he had a great career in the Western Hockey League (WHL). He played for the Brandon Wheat Kings and the Portland Winter Hawks. In 1986, Agnew officially became a professional player and signed with the Canucks.

Playing Career Highlights

Jim Agnew spent most of the 1986–87 hockey season playing in the AHL. This is a league where players often develop their skills before moving to the top league. He did get to play four games with the Vancouver Canucks that season. For the next four years, he played mainly in Vancouver's minor-league teams. However, he sometimes got to play for the Canucks. For example, he played 10 games in the 1987–88 season. During that time, he earned his only point in the NHL, which is when a player scores a goal or helps another player score. He also played 7 games for the Canucks in the 1989–90 season.

Dealing with Injuries

In March 1990, while playing for the Canucks, Jim Agnew had a serious injury to his left knee. He needed surgery to fix it. This injury became a big problem for him. Over the next four seasons, he missed many games because of his knee. He had to have three more surgeries on it.

His knee problems started just as he was becoming a full-time NHL player. He spent almost all of the 1990–91 and 1991–92 seasons with the Canucks. He played in different positions, sometimes as a defenceman and sometimes as a forward. But because of his injuries, he could only play in 44 games during those two seasons. He didn't score any points during that time.

In 1992, the Canucks let him go. He then signed with the Hartford Whalers. But again, his left knee injury limited him to only 16 games. He hurt his knee once more during the Whalers' training camp in 1993. After that, he decided to stop playing hockey professionally.

Jim Agnew played in 81 NHL games over six seasons. He recorded 1 assist and spent 257 minutes in the penalty box.

Life After Hockey

After his hockey career ended, Jim Agnew moved to Missoula, Montana. He became a citizen of the United States. He then started a new career as a law enforcement officer.
