Jim Agnew (born March 21, 1966) is a Canadian former professional hockey player. He played as a defenceman, which means his main job was to protect his team's goal. Jim played for teams like the Vancouver Canucks and the Hartford Whalers in the NHL.
Jim was known as a strong player who focused on defending his team's net. The Vancouver Canucks chose him in the eighth round of the 1984 NHL Entry Draft when he was 18 years old. Before joining the professional leagues, he had a great career in a junior league called the Western Hockey League (WHL). He played for the Brandon Wheat Kings and the Portland Winter Hawks. In 1986, Jim became a professional player and signed with the Canucks.
Playing in the NHL and Minor Leagues
Jim Agnew started his professional career in the AHL, which is a minor league for the NHL. He spent most of the 1986–87 playing there. However, he also got to play four games with the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL that season.
For the next four years, Jim mostly played in the Canucks' minor league teams. He would sometimes get called up to play for the Canucks in the NHL. For example, he played 10 games in the 1987–88 season. During this time, he earned his only point in the NHL, which is when a player scores a goal or helps another player score. He also played 7 games for the Canucks in the 1989–90 season.
Dealing with Injuries
In March 1990, while playing for the Canucks, Jim seriously injured his left knee. This injury needed surgery to fix. Sadly, this was the start of a long-term problem with his knee. Over the next four seasons, his left knee caused him to miss many games. He had to have three more surgeries on it.
These knee problems happened just as he was starting to play in the NHL more regularly. He spent almost all of the 1990–91 and 1991–92 seasons with the Canucks. He was a versatile player, meaning he could play both defence and forward. But because of his injuries, he only played 44 games during those two seasons and didn't score any points.
In 1992, the Canucks released Jim from his contract. He then signed with the Hartford Whalers. However, his knee injury continued to bother him. He was only able to play 16 games for the Whalers. After injuring his knee again during the Whalers' training camp in 1993, Jim decided it was time to retire from hockey.
Overall, Jim Agnew played in 81 NHL games over six seasons. He recorded 1 assist and spent 257 minutes in the penalty box.
Life After Hockey
After his hockey career ended, Jim Agnew moved to Missoula, Montana, in the United States. He became a citizen of the United States and started a new career. He found work as a law enforcement officer.
