James "Fireball" Colzie (born June 12, 1920 – died March 23, 2010) was a talented baseball player. He was a pitcher in the Negro Leagues. Jim was nicknamed "Fireball" because of his super-fast pitches! He mostly played for the Indianapolis Clowns and the Atlanta Black Crackers.

Jim Colzie: A Baseball Star

Jim Colzie was born in Montezuma, Georgia. He grew up loving baseball. He became a professional pitcher in 1946. This was a time when African American players could not play in Major League Baseball. So, they played in their own leagues, called the Negro Leagues.

Playing in the Negro Leagues

Jim Colzie played for some famous teams. He started with the Indianapolis Clowns in 1946. The Clowns were known for their fun style of play. They often traveled all over the country. Later, Jim also played for the Atlanta Black Crackers.

Serving His Country

Before becoming a baseball star, Jim Colzie served in the United States Army. He was a soldier during World War II. Many brave athletes paused their careers to help their country during this important time.

A Tough Moment

On July 20, 1947, something difficult happened. The bus carrying Jim's team, the Indianapolis Clowns, was in an accident. Jim hurt his knee badly. This injury meant he could not play baseball for a while.

Jim Colzie's love for sports continued in his family. His son, Neal Colzie, also became a professional athlete. Neal played football in the National Football League, which is a very big achievement!
