Jimmy Lee Constable (born June 14, 1933 – died September 4, 2002) was a professional baseball player. He was a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB), which is the highest level of professional baseball in the United States and Canada. From 1957 to 1963, he played for several teams, including the New York/San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators, and Milwaukee Braves.

Constable was known by his nickname, "Sheriff." He was a special kind of player called a switch-hitter, meaning he could bat (hit the ball) with both his left and right hands. However, he always threw the ball with his left hand. He was born in Jonesborough, Tennessee, and stood about 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighing around 185 pounds.

Playing Baseball

Jimmy Constable spent five seasons playing in Major League Baseball. As a relief pitcher, his job was usually to come into the game after the starting pitcher had finished, often when the game was close or when his team needed to stop the other team from scoring.

He played for a few different teams during his career. He started with the New York Giants, who later moved to San Francisco and became the San Francisco Giants. He also played for the Cleveland Indians, the Washington Senators, and the Milwaukee Braves. Moving between teams is common in professional sports.

His Baseball Stats

During his time in the big leagues, Constable played in 56 games. Here's a look at some of his main stats:

  • Win–loss record: He had 3 wins and 4 losses. A pitcher gets a win if his team is ahead when he leaves the game and stays ahead. He gets a loss if his team is behind when he leaves and stays behind.
  • Earned Run Average (ERA): His ERA was 4.87. This number tells you, on average, how many "earned runs" a pitcher gives up per nine innings pitched. A lower ERA is better, meaning the pitcher gives up fewer runs.
  • Saves: He recorded 2 saves. A save is when a relief pitcher comes into a close game and finishes it without letting the other team score too much, helping his team win.
  • Innings pitched: He pitched a total of 98 innings. An inning is a part of a baseball game, and pitchers are measured by how many innings they pitch.

Later Life

After his baseball career, Jimmy Constable lived until he was 69 years old. He passed away on September 4, 2002, in Johnson City, Tennessee.
