Jim Hill was born on April 23, 1947. He is an American lawyer and financial expert. He is also a politician who served as the Oregon State Treasurer for two terms. This important job lasted from January 4, 1993, to January 1, 2001. Before that, Hill was part of the Oregon Legislative Assembly, which is where laws are made for the state.
Early Life and Education
Jim Hill was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He went to Michigan State University and earned a degree in economics in 1969. Later, he continued his studies at Indiana University Bloomington. There, he earned two more degrees: an MBA (Master of Business Administration) in 1971 and a law degree (Juris Doctor) in 1974.
His Political Journey
In 1992, Jim Hill made history when he was elected as the Oregon State Treasurer. He was the first African American to be elected to a statewide office in Oregon. Before becoming Treasurer, he served in the Oregon State Senate from 1987 to 1993. He also served in the Oregon House of Representatives from 1983 to 1987.
Jim Hill tried to become governor of Oregon in 2002 and 2006, but he was not successful. In 2010, he briefly ran for Oregon State Treasurer again. This was a special election to finish the term of Ben Westlund, who had passed away.
