Jim Peacock facts for kids
William James Peacock (born 14 December 1937) is an Australian molecular biologist. He held important roles like Chief Scientist of Australia from 2006 to 2008. He was also the President of the Australian Academy of Science from 2002 to 2006. Before that, he led CSIRO Plant Industry from 1978 to 2003.
Peacock was born in Leura, New South Wales. He studied botany and zoology at the University of Sydney. There, he earned his PhD in genetics. After his studies, he worked in genetics at the University of Oregon in the USA. He also worked in molecular biology at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Later, he returned to Australia to work with the CSIRO.
Dr. Peacock has been a member of important science groups. These include the Prime Minister's Science, Engineering and Innovation Council. He also served on the Australian Research Council (ARC) Grants Committee. In 2000, he received the first Prime Minister's Prize for Science. This was a major award for his work in science.
In March 2006, Peacock became the Chief Scientist of Australia. This was a part-time job. His term ended on August 31, 2008. Penny Sackett took over his role later that year.
