Early Life and School
Jim Thornton was born in Huntington, West Virginia. He finished high school at Huntington High School in 1983. The next year, in 1984, he moved to Los Angeles to start his career in broadcasting. He also studied linguistics at Marshall University. Linguistics is the study of language.
His Career in Radio
Jim Thornton is famous for his work on the all-news radio station KNX 1070 in Los Angeles. He used to report on traffic, but then he became an afternoon news anchor. This means he read the news during the afternoon. He also lent his voice to other shows, like Celebrity Deathmatch, and narrated a part of the movie Monsters, Inc..
Announcer for Game Shows
Jim Thornton has worked as a substitute announcer for The Price Is Right. In December 2010, he tried out for the announcer role on Wheel of Fortune. He was chosen for the job on June 13, 2011. Because of his busy schedule with Wheel of Fortune, he reduced his hours at KNX radio.
In 2021, Jim Thornton also became the announcer for Celebrity Wheel of Fortune on ABC. This version of the show features famous people playing to win money for charity.
On April 26, 2023, something fun happened on Wheel of Fortune. Jim Thornton switched places with the show's host, Pat Sajak! Jim hosted the bonus round, and Pat was the announcer. This happened because a contestant named Sarah Ward was a big fan of Jim and wanted to meet him in person.
