James Leroy Usry (born February 2, 1922 – died January 25, 2002) was a very important person. He was the first African-American Mayor of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Before becoming a mayor, he was also a professional basketball player!

Who Was Jim Usry?

Jim Usry was born in Athens, Georgia, on February 2, 1922. He grew up and went to Atlantic City High School. After high school, he continued his education.

His College and Early Career

Jim Usry earned his first college degree in 1946 from Lincoln University. He loved learning and later earned a master's degree in 1971. This second degree was from Glassboro State College.

From 1946 to 1951, Jim Usry played professional basketball. He played for famous teams like the New York Renaissance and the Dayton Rens. He was a talented athlete!

Jim Usry as an Educator

Before becoming a mayor, Jim Usry worked as an educator. From 1952 to 1984, he taught in the Atlantic City School District. He helped many students learn and grow.

He also became an assistant superintendent from 1977 to 1984. This meant he helped manage the schools in the district.

Jim Usry was a member of the Republican Party. He decided to enter politics to help his community.

Becoming Mayor of Atlantic City
