James H. "Jumpin' Jimmy" Washington (born July 1, 1943) is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He was a 6-foot-6-inch forward who played for several teams in the NBA.
Jim Washington was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He went to Villanova University for college. After college, he was chosen by the St. Louis Hawks as the 6th pick in the 1965 NBA draft. This meant he was one of the first players picked to join the NBA that year.
Playing for the Chicago Bulls
After playing one year with the St. Louis Hawks, Jim joined the Chicago Bulls. He quickly became a favorite among the fans. He was the first player for the Bulls to average more than ten rebounds per game. Rebounds happen when a player grabs the ball after a shot is missed.
In the 1967–1968 season, he averaged 12.5 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. Points are how many scores a player makes, and rebounds are how many times they get the ball back after a missed shot.
Playoff Games
During the 1968 NBA playoffs, Jim Washington played some of his best games. He averaged 17.2 points and 15 rebounds per game. Even with his great playing, the Bulls lost in the first round to the Los Angeles Lakers.
The next season, Washington continued to play well. He averaged 14 points and 10.6 rebounds per game.
Later Career Teams
After his time with the Chicago Bulls, Jim Washington played for a few other NBA teams. He played for the Philadelphia 76ers, the Atlanta Hawks (which was the same team as the St. Louis Hawks, just moved to a new city), and the Buffalo Braves.
He retired from basketball with a total of 6,637 career rebounds. This shows he was a very strong player when it came to getting the ball back for his team.
