Music Journey
Starting Out (2012–2014)
Jimmy Prime and the Prime Boys first became known in their local area of St. Lawrence, Toronto. They released many freestyles and mixtapes in 2014. Jimmy Prime helped his group get a lot of attention. This was because he came up with "The Six" as a nickname for Toronto.
Before he was known as Jimmy Prime, he used the name "Jimmy Johnson." His song "Pray" became very popular after it was shared on OVO's blogs. This created excitement for his first mixtape, In God We Trust. It came out in early 2014. All the songs on it were produced by Eric Dingus. People thought he might join Drake's OVO Sound record label.
His second mixtape, Red Ferrari, was released through OVO Sound and his own label, PRIME. Eric Dingus also produced all the songs on this mixtape. Many Toronto artists noticed Red Ferrari. Jimmy Prime also became good friends with producer Murda Beatz. Murda Beatz would later produce many of Jimmy Prime's songs.
Block Boy and Bleeding Bull (2015–2017)
In 2015, Jimmy Prime helped produce a song called "Now & Forever." This song was on Drake's album If You're Reading This It's Too Late. This helped Jimmy Prime become known to a wider audience around the world.
Jimmy Prime released his third mixtape, Block Boy, in July 2015. It included a song called "Best One" with another artist named Whiss. After the mixtape came out, Vice magazine did a photoshoot with him. This helped him gain attention across Canada. In an interview, Jimmy Prime explained the name Block Boy. He said it meant that no matter how successful he became, society would always see him as someone from his neighborhood.
In 2016, XXL magazine listed Prime as one of the top 10 Canadian artists to know. That year, he also appeared on Murda Beatz's mixtape Keep God First. He was featured on the song "Drop Out." This prepared him for his first EP (Extended Play) called Bleeding Bull. An EP is like a mini-album with fewer songs. This EP had six songs. Producers like STWO, Wonda Gurl, Murda Beatz, and Arthur McArthur worked on it. It was released on March 28, 2017. A music reviewer said that Bleeding Bull might not be his best work, but it showed that he stayed true to his unique sound.
Koba World and New Music (2018–2022)
In January 2018, it was announced that Jimmy Prime and the Prime Boys were working on their first album together. It was first called Prime Forever. The next month, they released a song called "Tinted." Murda Beatz produced this song. It was the first single from their upcoming album. The music video for "Tinted" showed the group riding ATVs on a frozen lake. This song helped Prime Boys grow their careers. It also helped promote Canada's growing hip-hop music scene.
In an interview, Jimmy Prime talked about the music scene in Toronto. He said that even though Toronto has many famous artists, not all of them become huge stars. Sadly, in June 2018, two people connected to the group, Smoke Dawg and Koba Prime, passed away. Koba Prime was the Prime Boys' assistant manager. Because of Koba Prime's passing, the group changed the name of their album to Koba World to honor him. Jimmy Prime said that Koba always gave them good advice and was like family to them. The album Koba World was officially released on July 27, 2018. Other songs from the album included "Hold Me Down" and "Sopranos." Jimmy Prime also sold special Prime Boys merchandise at a pop-up shop in Toronto in August 2018.
In December 2019, Prime appeared on 6ixBuzz's album Northern Sound. He was on track 13, "The World is Yours," with Jay Whiss and Safe. Jimmy Prime released his first song of 2020 called "Keep to Myself" on February 20. He also announced that his first full album, Blue Mercedes, would be released soon. This album will come out after his EP Incase we don't make it tomorrow, which was released in June 2022.
