Jimmy Roy was chosen by the Dallas Stars in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. This is like a special lottery where professional teams pick young players. He was the 254th player picked that year. Even though he was drafted, Jimmy never played in the National Hockey League (NHL).

Before turning pro, Jimmy spent two years playing college hockey. He played for Michigan Technological University. In 1997, he signed a contract with the Manitoba Moose. This team was part of the International Hockey League (IHL) at the time.

Playing for the Manitoba Moose

Jimmy Roy played for the Manitoba Moose for nine seasons. The first four seasons were in the IHL. After the IHL closed down, the Moose joined the American Hockey League (AHL). Jimmy continued to play for them in the AHL.

He became a very important player for the Moose. He set several team records. These included playing the most games and scoring the most goals for the team. Because he was such a key player, the team honored him. In February 2020, the Manitoba Moose retired his jersey number. This means no other player on the team will ever wear his number again. It's a huge honor in hockey!

Moving to Germany: Iserlohn Roosters

For the 2006–07 season, Jimmy Roy decided to play hockey in Germany. He signed with the Iserlohn Roosters. This team plays in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL), which is Germany's top hockey league.

In Iserlohn, Jimmy became a leader on the team. He was known for his great leadership skills. He helped the club sign other players he knew from the Moose. These players included Ryan Ready and Pat Kavanagh. Jimmy liked playing in Germany and signed new contracts to stay longer. He often played on a line with Ryan Ready. Another player, Bob Wren, also joined their line later on.

Life After Playing Hockey

In 2011, Jimmy Roy decided to stop playing hockey professionally. He retired as a player. But he didn't leave the world of hockey! He took on a new role. He became the director of player development for the Winnipeg Jets. This team is part of the National Hockey League (NHL). In this job, he helps young players grow and improve their skills.

Awards and Achievements

Jimmy Roy received some special awards during his career:

  • 2002–03 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award: This award is given to an AHL player who shows great community involvement. They also need to have good sportsmanship and be a leader.
