Jimmy Ward was a famous Irish musician. He was born in 1909 in Tullagha, Kilfenora, County Clare, Ireland. He passed away in 1987 in Milltown Malbay. Jimmy was well-known for playing the banjo and for his unique 'lilting' style. Lilting is a type of singing without words. It uses sounds like 'la la la' to create music.
When he was younger, Jimmy played several instruments. These included the flute, piccolo, and whistle. But in the 1940s, he decided to focus on the banjo.
Jimmy Ward's Musical Journey
Starting the Kilfenora Céilí Band
Jimmy helped restart the Kilfenora Céilí Band in 1927. This band became very successful. They won the All Ireland championships three times in a row. These wins happened at the Fleadh Cheoil, a big music festival. A famous traditional Irish tune, Jimmy Ward's Jig, is named after him.
Forming a New Band
In 1974, Jimmy decided to leave the Kilfenora Céilí Band. He then formed a new group called Bannermen. He started this band with two other musicians, PJ Murrihy and Michael Sexton.
Later Life and Legacy
Later in his life, Jimmy moved to Milltown Malbay. There, he opened his own small shop. In the early 1970s, he was in a serious car crash in Inagh. Jimmy Ward passed away in 1987. His music continues to be enjoyed by many.
