Jiří Paďour (born April 4, 1943 – died December 11, 2015) was an important leader in the Catholic Church. He was a member of the Capuchin Order. He served as an Auxiliary Bishop in Prague from 1996 to 2001. Later, he became the Bishop of České Budějovice, serving from 2002 to 2014.
Early Life and Calling
Jiří Paďour was born on April 4, 1943, in Vraclav, which is now part of the Czech Republic. He first studied acting at the Academy of Performing Arts. He graduated in 1962. After graduating, he worked as an actor at the Theatre on the Balustrade.
In 1970, Jiří decided to change his path. He chose to study to become a priest. He enrolled in a seminary in Litoměřice. He became a priest in 1975. For two years, he worked as a priest in Marienbad and nearby areas. On October 4, 1978, he secretly joined the Capuchin Order. This was during a time when the Communist government did not approve of religious activities.
Becoming a Bishop
Jiří Paďour was chosen to lead the Capuchin Order in his region twice. This happened in 1991 and again in 1994.
On December 3, 1996, Pope John Paul II appointed Jiří Paďour as a bishop. He became an Auxiliary Bishop for the city of Prague. His official ceremony to become a bishop took place on January 11, 1997.
On February 23, 2001, he was appointed as a coadjutor bishop for the Diocese of České Budějovice. This meant he would help Bishop Anthony Liska. Jiří Paďour then took over as the main leader of the diocese on September 25, 2002.
Later Years and Passing
On March 1, 2014, Pope Francis accepted Bishop Paďour's request to step down. He resigned from his role as bishop due to health reasons.
Jiří Paďour passed away on December 11, 2015. He died in Prachatice, Czech Republic.
