For a short time, she studied math at Purdue University. To support herself, she worked at a steel mill. However, she says this job didn't really influence her music.

Rise to Fame
First Success
Jlin created a track called "... Heat". At first, she wasn't sure about releasing it because it sounded different from typical footwork songs. But the track was included on a 2011 album called Bangs & Works, Vol. 2. This album featured many artists from Chicago and helped Jlin get noticed.
In 2014, the famous fashion designer Rick Owens used "... Heat" in one of his fashion shows. This brought her music to an even bigger audience. In 2015, she released her first full album, Dark Energy, which received excellent reviews.
Black Origami and Other Projects
In 2017, Jlin released her second album, Black Origami. This album featured collaborations with other artists like William Basinski and Holly Herndon. It was praised by critics and appeared on many "best of the year" lists.
Jlin's music is not just for albums. In 2017, she was asked to write the music for a dance performance called "AutoBIOgraphy". In 2020, she created a piece called "Perspectives" for the music group Third Coast Percussion.
In 2022, Jlin worked with the online music school Soundfly to create a course. The course teaches students about her creative process. In 2023, she was a finalist for the famous Pulitzer Prize for Music for her composition Perspective.
