Aston Villa Football Club

Jlloyd Samuel was born in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago. He grew up in London, England. As a young player, he played for a Sunday league team called Senrab. In 1994, he played alongside future England stars like John Terry.

He joined Aston Villa in July 1997 as a youth trainee. Samuel made his first team debut for Aston Villa on September 21, 1999. This was in a League Cup match against Chester City. He came on as a substitute in that game. On March 25, 2000, he played his first league game. This was because England player Gareth Southgate was injured. Samuel played as a central defender in that match.

In October 2001, Samuel was loaned to Gillingham, a club in the First Division. He played eight games for them. When he returned to Aston Villa, the team's main right-back was injured. Samuel stepped in to play that position. Later, he became a regular left-back. He once said that being able to play in different positions helped him play more often.

During the 2003–04 season, Samuel played every minute of every game for Aston Villa. The team finished 6th in the Premier League that season. He scored his first professional goal on September 20, 2003. It was against his old club, Charlton, and helped Villa win 2–1. He scored again against Charlton in March 2004. He also scored in a League Cup semi-final game in January 2004. Towards the end of his time at Aston Villa, he played less often. Other players were chosen over him for his position.
