In 1975, Jo Ellen moved to Canada. She became a Canadian citizen in 1995 but also kept her US citizenship. She married Jim Bogart, who was studying in Texas but was born in Toronto. They lived in Louisiana for four years before moving to Guelph, where her husband worked at the University of Guelph. Jo Ellen also worked as a substitute teacher for several years.

She also wrote the lyrics for six songs on a children's music album called Gonna Keep Dancing, which was nominated for a Juno Award.
