Early Life and Background
Joakim Brodén's father is from Sweden, and his mother is from the country that used to be called Czechoslovakia. Because of this, Joakim is a citizen of both Sweden and the Czech Republic. He has shared that he started loving metal music when he was very young, around three or four years old. This happened after he saw a music video for the song "We're Not Gonna Take It" by the band Twisted Sister. When he was a kid, he was also a competitive swimmer.
Music Career Highlights
Before starting Sabaton, Joakim Brodén joined a band called Stormwind for a tour. He played keyboards for them. In 1999, he and Pär Sundström created their own band, Sabaton. Joakim is the main singer and keyboardist. He also sometimes plays a third guitar for the band. It was Joakim who thought of the name "Sabaton" for the band. A sabaton is a special part of a knight's armor that covers the foot.
When Joakim performs with Sabaton, he often wears a unique vest. This vest has metal plates and looks a bit like a bulletproof vest. He is also known for his cool mohawk hairstyle and his neatly trimmed facial hair. Joakim has a deep singing voice, which is called a baritone.
In 2015, Joakim lost a bet with his bandmates. The bet meant he had to walk to Sabaton's next concert. He didn't realize the concert was in Trondheim, Norway, which was about 350 miles (560 km) away! Joakim stayed at the homes of several fans during his long walk.
In 2016, Joakim took part in a singing contest in the Czech Republic called Český slavík. He finished in fifth place. He tried again the next year, but he was not allowed to compete. This was because of a new rule that said contestants had to mostly perform in the Czech Republic.
Other Interests
Joakim Brodén enjoys playing pinball. In 2016 and 2017, he competed in the Swedish national pinball championships.
