Joan Cañellas Reixach (born September 30, 1986) is a famous Spanish former handball player. He was known for his powerful shots and smart plays on the court. Joan played as a left back, which is a key attacking position in handball. He achieved many great things during his career, both with his clubs and with the Spanish national team.

In 2014, Joan was the top scorer at the European Championship held in Denmark. He scored an amazing 50 goals for Spain in that tournament! Beyond handball, Joan also studied pharmacy. Joan started his career with BM Granollers. He then moved to FC Barcelona, where he won the Spanish League in 2006. He also won the Spanish Cup and Spanish Supercup in 2007.

Later, with BM Ciudad Real, he won another Spanish League title in 2010. He also helped them win the Super Globe (a world club championship) in 2010. With Atlético Madrid, he won the Super Globe again in 2012.

Success in Germany and North Macedonia

After playing in Spain, Joan moved to Germany to play for HSV Hamburg and then THW Kiel. With THW Kiel, he won the Handball-Bundesliga (German League) in 2015.

He then joined RK Vardar in North Macedonia. This was a very successful period! He helped Vardar win the EHF Champions League in 2017, which is the biggest club competition in European handball. They also won the Macedonian League and Cup multiple times.

Hungarian and Swiss Triumphs

From 2018 to 2021, Joan played for SC Pick Szeged in Hungary. He helped them win the Hungarian League in 2021.

His final club was Kadetten Schaffhausen in Switzerland. He played there from 2021 until his retirement in 2024. With Kadetten Schaffhausen, he won the Swiss Handball League three times in a row (2022, 2023, 2024) and the Swiss Cup in 2024.

Individual Recognition

Joan Cañellas was also recognized for his individual skills. In 2017, he was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the SEHA League Final Four. This award showed how important he was to his team's success.
