Joan I (born May 8, 1326 – died September 29, 1360) was an important noblewoman in France. She ruled as the Countess of Auvergne and Boulogne from 1332 to 1360. She also became the Queen of France when she married King John II.

Her Early Life and Family

Joan was the daughter of William XII, who was the Count of Auvergne and Boulogne. Her mother was Margaret, who was the sister of Philip III of Navarre. When her father passed away, Joan inherited his lands. This made her the Countess of Auvergne and Boulogne.

First Marriage and Children

Joan's first husband was Philip of Burgundy. He became the Count of Auvergne because of their marriage. They had one child who lived to adulthood. This child was Philip, who later became the Duke of Burgundy.

Second Marriage and Queen of France

After her first husband died, Joan married John II of France on February 13, 1350. They both had been married before. John's first wife, Bonne of Bohemia, had passed away from the Black Death. She had left John with eight children.

Because John already had many children, there was no pressure for Joan to have a son to inherit the throne. Joan's own son, Philip, became a special ward of the King. Joan and King John had three children together. They had two daughters and one son, but sadly, all of them died when they were very young. Joan herself passed away in 1360. Her lands and titles were then inherited by her son, Philip.

Joan's Children

Here are the children Joan had:

Children with Philip of Burgundy

Children with John II of France

  • Blanche (born November 1350). She died very young.
  • Catherine (born 1352). She also died very young.
  • An unnamed son (born 1353). He also died very young.
