Joan Ruth Leitzel (born July 2, 1936) is an American mathematician and a leader in universities. She helped guide two important universities. First, she was a temporary leader at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. After that, she became the president of the University of New Hampshire.
She was the president of the University of New Hampshire from 1996 to 2002. For all her hard work and important contributions, she received the Charles Holmes Pettee Medal in 2002. This award recognized her positive impact on the university.
Early Life and Education
Joan Leitzel grew up in Valparaiso, Indiana. She finished high school at Valparaiso High School. After high school, she continued her studies at several universities.
She earned her first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (BA), from Hanover College in 1958. She then went on to get a Master of Arts (AM) degree from Brown University in 1961. Finally, she earned her highest degree, a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), from Indiana University Bloomington in 1965. Her PhD was in a field of math called algebra.
In May 2024, Dr. Leitzel returned to Hanover College. She gave a speech at their graduation ceremony. Hanover College also gave her an honorary doctorate degree. This special degree recognized her achievements and contributions.
Leading Universities
Dr. Leitzel has held important leadership roles in higher education. She was a temporary leader, called an interim chancellor, at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. She served in this role for about six months, from July 1995 to January 1996.
After her time at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, she became the president of the University of New Hampshire. She led this university for six years, from 1996 to 2002. As president, she was in charge of many important decisions and helped guide the university forward.
