Lady Joan Margaret Legge was an English botanist. She lived from 1885 to 1939. She sadly passed away in India while collecting plants. This happened in a beautiful place called the Valley of Flowers.
Her Early Life
Joan Margaret Legge was born on February 21, 1885. Her father was William Legge, 6th Earl of Dartmouth. Her mother was Lady Mary Coke. Joan also served as a Justice of Peace for Staffordshire. This role meant she helped keep peace and order in her local area.
Her Work and Final Journey
In 1939, Joan Margaret Legge traveled to India. She went there to study the plants of the Valley of Flowers. She was working for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. While exploring some rocky hillsides to gather flowers, she slipped. Sadly, she lost her life. She was 54 years old and had not married.
Later, her sister came to India looking for Joan. She built a special tomb for Joan inside the Valley of Flowers.
How She Is Remembered
Joan Margaret Legge is remembered for her work. In 2010, a new type of plant was found near the Valley of Flowers. It was named Impatiens leggei in her honor. This plant is a species of Impatiens.
