Joan Margarit i Consarnau (born May 11, 1938 – died February 16, 2021) was a famous writer, architect, and teacher from Catalonia, Spain. He wrote most of his poems in the Catalan language. In 2019, he won a very important award called the Miguel de Cervantes Prize.

Life and Career
Joan Margarit was born in Sanaüja, a town in Spain. His father was an architect and his mother was a teacher. Joan grew up during a difficult time, around the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War.
His family moved around Catalonia a lot. In 1954, they moved to the Canary Islands. But in 1956, Joan went back to Barcelona to study architecture.
After finishing his studies, he met Mariona Ribalta. They got married in 1963. They had three daughters, Mònica, Anna, and Joana, and one son, Carles.
From 1975, Joan lived in Sant Just Desvern. He worked there as an architect with his friend Carles Buxadé starting in 1980. He was also a professor at the Technical School of Architecture in Barcelona for many years. He taught about structural calculations.
Joan Margarit started writing and publishing poetry in Spanish in 1963. After a break, he began writing in Catalan from 1980 onwards. He became very well-known for his Catalan poetry.
His poems have been translated into many languages. These include English, Russian, and Hebrew. Musicians have also recorded his poems with music.
In 2008, Joan Margarit received the National Poetry Prize for his book Casa de Misericordia.
He passed away on February 16, 2021, in Sant Just Desvern. He was 82 years old and had been battling cancer.
