Early Life and Education

Joan Ross was born in Glasgow, Scotland. She studied art at the City Art Institute and later earned a special degree in Fine Arts from the University of New South Wales.

Career Highlights

Joan Ross has been showing her art since the late 1980s. She has had many solo art shows in places like Hobart and Sydney. Her art has also been part of bigger group exhibitions. For example, her work was shown in Colonial Afterlives in Hobart and Wonderland: New Contemporary Art from Australia in Taipei.

Ross has won several awards for her art. In 2015, she won the Glennfiddich Artists Residency Prize. She was also a finalist for important awards like the Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize and the Blake Prize for Religious Art. In 2012, she won the Viewers' Choice Award at the Redlands Westpac Art Prize.

One of her most famous artworks, called Oh history, you lied to me, won the big Sir John Sulman Prize in 2017.

More recently, in 2019, Joan Ross showed her art in several exhibitions, including Collectors Paradise in Sydney. She also created a special virtual reality artwork called Did you ask the river? which was shown at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne.

In 2020, she made a large artwork for the Art Gallery of New South Wales called We have sung the same song. Her painting Joan as a colonial woman looking at the future was chosen as a finalist for the famous Archibald Prize in 2021. Another work, ‘You were my biggest regret’: diary entry 1806, was also a finalist for the Archibald Prize in 2022.
