About Joaquín Carbonell
Early Life and Education
Joaquín Carbonell was born in Alloza, a town in Teruel, Spain. His father was a teacher. When Joaquín was young, he studied at a Salesian school in Barcelona. However, at age 15, he decided to leave school and started working in a hotel.
For several years, Joaquín worked as a waiter and a sommelier (someone who helps with wine choices) at different resorts along the Catalan coast during the summer. In the winter, he worked at his family's oil mill in Alloza. In 1967, he went back to school in Teruel. There, he began to write about music.
Becoming a Musician and Writer
In the 1970s, Joaquín Carbonell started writing his own songs. He became an important part of a new music movement in Aragon, a region in Spain. This movement was called the "new Aragonese song." He worked with his mentor, José Antonio Labordeta, who was also a famous singer.
Joaquín recorded more than ten music albums. Two of these albums were special because they honored a famous French singer named Georges Brassens. Besides singing, Joaquín also directed and hosted several TV shows for TVE, a Spanish television channel, in the Aragon region.
He also became a poet and a storyteller. As a journalist, he wrote for a newspaper called El Periódico de Aragón. In his section, he wrote interviews and reviewed TV shows. He even created songs for the Real Zaragoza football (soccer) club, like "Corazón de León" and "Zaragol." He also wrote the official song for the club's 75th anniversary.
Performances and Later Works
Joaquín Carbonell often performed at the Barnasants Festival in Barcelona. He also sang in cities in France, such as Pau, Toulouse, Saint Jory, and Paris. He traveled to Argentina three times to perform concerts in cities like Buenos Aires, Rosario, and La Plata. He also performed in Montevideo (Uruguay), Chile, and Costa Rica.
In 2014, he took part in a special concert in Zaragoza to honor José Labordeta, his mentor. Later that year, Joaquín released a double album called 1 vida & 19 canciones, which was a collection of his songs. In 2017, he released a new album with brand new songs called El carbón y la rosa.
Joaquín Carbonell passed away on September 12, 2020, in Zaragoza. He was 73 years old.
