This is a self-portrait of Joaquín Inza, painted around 1780. It's kept at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid.

Joaquín Inza y Ainsa (born July 19, 1736 – died February 13, 1811) was a talented Spanish painter. He lived during the Baroque period, which was a time of grand and dramatic art. Inza was especially known for painting portraits of important people.

About Joaquín Inza's Life

Joaquín Inza was born in a town called Ágreda in Spain. His parents were Felipe Inza and Rufina Ayssa. His father, Felipe, was also a painter and worked with plaster. Joaquín started learning art in his father's workshop when he was young.

In 1752, Joaquín joined the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. This was a very important art school in Spain. In 1753, he tried to win a special art competition. He submitted a painting called Fauno del cabrito (Kid Faun). Unfortunately, he didn't win the scholarship to travel to Rome. Another artist named José del Castillo won that year.

Even without the scholarship, Joaquín Inza worked on a big project. When he was 22, he painted beautiful frescoes. These were large paintings on the ceiling and walls. He decorated the sacristy (a room for priests) of the Virgin in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar. This was a very important church.

Joaquín Inza's Famous Works

Joaquín Inza became a popular painter. Important people like the Duchess of Arcos and the Duke of Fernán Nuñez hired him. Inza mostly painted portraits, which are pictures of people.

His style was sometimes similar to another famous Spanish painter, Francisco Goya. Because of this, it can be hard to tell their paintings apart sometimes!

Inza received many important requests from the Royal Court. For example, in 1760, he painted full-length portraits of Don Carlos's children. In 1770, he painted Don Gabriel's children. He worked for the royal family, but he never got an official position at the court.

In the 1770s, he painted at least three portraits of Charles III of Spain. These paintings are still preserved today. You can find them in places like the Sociedad Económica de los Amigos del País in Zaragoza. They are also at the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation. All of these portraits have his signature.

Joaquín Inza also painted other well-known people. In 1785, he painted the poet Tomás de Iriarte y Oropesa. He also painted Manuel Godoy, Prince of the Peace in 1773. In 1782, he painted the Dowager Countess of Benavente, Zamora. These painting jobs earned him a lot of money. He was financially successful, as shown in his will from November 10, 1800.
