Joaquín Sánchez de Toca y Calvo (born September 24, 1852 – died July 13, 1942) was an important Spanish politician. He belonged to the Conservative Party. He is best known for serving as the Prime Minister of Spain in 1919.
Early Life and Career
Joaquín Sánchez de Toca was born in Madrid, the capital city of Spain, on September 24, 1852. He started his political career by becoming the Mayor of Madrid in 1896. He held this important position until 1897.
Serving as a Minister
Sánchez de Toca also served in several government roles called "ministers." These roles are like leading different departments of the government.
- Minister of Agriculture, Industry and Commerce: From 1900 to 1901, he was in charge of farming, factories, and trade. This was during the time when Queen Maria Christina of Austria was ruling Spain for her young son.
- Minister of the Navy: From 1902 to 1903, he was responsible for Spain's navy. This means he helped manage the country's ships and sailors.
- Minister of Justice: From 1903 to 1904, he worked as the Minister of Justice. In this role, he helped oversee the country's laws and legal system.
He became the Mayor of Madrid again in 1907, showing his continued importance in the city's leadership.
Becoming Prime Minister
In 1919, Joaquín Sánchez de Toca reached one of the highest political positions in Spain. He became the Prime Minister, replacing another well-known politician, Antonio Maura.

Later Life
Joaquín Sánchez de Toca passed away on July 13, 1942, in Pozuelo de Alarcón, a town near Madrid. He lived to be 89 years old.
