Jobst Brandt (born January 14, 1935 – died May 5, 2015) was an amazing American engineer, inventor, and bicycle expert. He loved bikes, taught others about them, and even wrote a famous book.

Jobst Brandt's Early Life and Work

Jobst Brandt was born in New York City. His father, Karl Brandt, was a professor. In 1938, his family moved to Palo Alto, California.

Jobst went to Stanford University and studied mechanical engineering. This means he learned how to design and build machines. He graduated in 1958. After college, he spent two years in the US Army Corps of Engineers in Germany.

Later, Jobst worked for several cool companies. He worked at Porsche, which makes sports cars. He also worked at Hewlett Packard, a big computer company, and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, a science lab.

His most famous work for cyclists was at a company called Avocet. There, he helped create a special computer for bikes, touring shoes, and high-performance bicycle tires. He also wrote his best-selling book, The Bicycle Wheel. This book is all about how to build and fix bicycle wheels.

From the late 1980s to the early 2000s, Jobst Brandt was very active online. He shared his ideas and knowledge on early internet forums called Usenet newsgroups. These were like online chat rooms for people interested in bikes.
