HP's Early Days: A Garage Startup
Bill Hewlett and David Packard both studied electrical engineering. They graduated from Stanford University in 1935. When they decided to start their company, they flipped a coin. This coin toss decided if the company would be called Hewlett-Packard or Packard-Hewlett.
In 1942, they built their first real office building. It was located at 395 Page Mill Road. During World War II, HP helped the war effort. They employed 200 people. They made important tools like audio oscillators and vacuum-tube voltmeters.
Hewlett and Packard also worked on secret projects for the war. They developed technology to counter radar. They also worked on special fuses for artillery shells. This work was very important for the country.
