Jocelyn Mary Catherine Toynbee (born March 3, 1897 – died December 31, 1985) was an English archaeologist and art historian. An archaeologist studies old things and places to learn about the past. An art historian studies art from different times and cultures.

Jocelyn Toynbee was a very important expert in Roman art studies in the mid-1900s. Many people around the world looked to her as a top authority. She taught at several famous universities like St Hugh's College, Oxford, the University of Reading, and Newnham College, Cambridge. From 1951 to 1962, she was the Laurence Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Cambridge. This was a very important job in her field.

About Jocelyn Toynbee

Jocelyn Toynbee was the daughter of Harry Valpy Toynbee and Sarah Edith Marshall. Her father worked for a charity group. Her brother, Arnold J. Toynbee, was also a famous historian who studied the history of the world.

Jocelyn went to Winchester High School for Girls. Later, she studied at Newnham College, Cambridge from 1916 to 1920. She did very well there, earning top grades in her Classics course. Classics is the study of ancient Greek and Roman languages, literature, and history. She also earned a special degree called a doctorate from Oxford University. Her research for this degree was about sculptures made during the time of the Roman Emperor Hadrian.

Her Teaching Career

Jocelyn Toynbee had a long and successful teaching career.

  • From 1921 to 1924, she was a tutor in Classics at St Hugh's College, Oxford.
  • From 1924 to 1927, she taught Classics at Reading University.
  • In 1927, she became a Fellow and Lecturer at Newnham College, Cambridge. She also directed studies in Classics there until 1951.
  • In 1931, she became a lecturer in Classics at Cambridge University.
  • Later, she became the fourth person to hold the important title of Laurence Professor of Classical Archaeology from 1951 to 1962.

Jocelyn Toynbee also worked closely with the British School at Rome. This is a place where scholars study ancient Rome. She was the head of the Faculty there from 1954 to 1959. In 1962, she helped organize a big exhibition at the Guildhall Museum. This exhibition showed Roman art found in Britain and led to an important book.

Awards and Recognition

Jocelyn Toynbee received many awards and honors for her work.

  • In 1943, she became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (FSA). This means she was recognized as an expert in old objects and customs.
  • In 1948, she won a medal from the Royal Numismatic Society. This society studies coins and medals.
  • In 1952, she was chosen as a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA). This is a very high honor for scholars in the humanities and social sciences.
  • In 1956, she received the Huntington Medal from the American Numismatic Society.
  • In 1973, she was made an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Many people respected her work. In 1977, a book was published with 20 different papers written in her honor. This showed how much other scholars valued her contributions to understanding ancient art.
