Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jodhpur was once a special kind of kingdom in India called a princely state. It is now part of the state of Rajasthan in India. These states were ruled by their own kings, known as Maharajas.

What Was Jodhpur?

Jodhpur was a powerful princely state. It existed before India became fully independent. The region was also known as Marwar. This name meant 'the land of death'. It got this name because of very difficult living conditions. There were often severe famines, which are times of extreme hunger.

Building the Umaid Bhawan Palace

During one of these famines, Maharaja Umaid Singhji decided to help his people. He started building a grand palace in Jodhpur. This palace is known as the Umaid Bhawan Palace. The main reason for building it was to give jobs to many people. This helped them earn money during the difficult famine.

Jodhpur Joins India

When India was becoming independent, princely states had to choose. They could join either India or Pakistan. The ruler of Jodhpur, the Maharaja, thought about joining Pakistan.

However, Lord Mountbatten advised him. Lord Mountbatten was an important British leader. He told the Maharaja that most of his people were Hindu. Joining Pakistan, which was mainly Muslim, could cause big problems.

Because of this advice, Jodhpur decided to join India. This was an important moment for the state.
