Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Joe Louis Clark (born May 8, 1938 – died December 29, 2020) was a famous principal at Eastside High School in Paterson, New Jersey. He became well-known in the 1980s for his strong and sometimes unusual ways of keeping students in line. His story was even made into a movie in 1989 called Lean on Me, where Morgan Freeman played him.

Early Life and Education

Joe Clark was born in Rochelle, Georgia, on May 8, 1938. When he was six years old, his family moved to Newark, New Jersey. He finished high school at Central High School in Newark.

He continued his education, earning a bachelor's degree from William Paterson College and a master's degree from Seton Hall University. He also received an honorary doctorate degree later on. Before becoming a principal, Clark served in the US Army Reserve as a drill sergeant.

Career as a Principal

Clark was known as an educator who wasn't afraid to be tough with students who caused trouble. He often carried a bullhorn and sometimes even a baseball bat at school. During his time as principal, Clark expelled many students who were often late, absent, or caused problems.

Some people believed his strict methods helped turn the school around. He focused on making the school clean and orderly. He also worked to encourage school pride and good behavior among the students.

However, others pointed out that while order improved, student test scores didn't go up much. For example, reading scores stayed low. Also, the number of students dropping out of Eastside High actually increased during his time there.

After leaving Eastside High, Clark worked as the director of a place for young people in trouble, called the Essex County Detention House in Newark.

How Joe Clark is Remembered

Joe Clark's style as a principal was mainly about discipline. He wanted students to behave well and be proud of their school.

Some educators praised Clark, saying that a tough approach was needed when a school was in chaos. They felt that a strong leader like him was necessary to bring things under control.

However, other educators had concerns. They worried that expelling students, especially those who were struggling, might just move the problems from the school to the streets. They believed that schools should try to help all students, even the difficult ones.

Clark defended his actions, saying that teachers shouldn't have to waste time on students who didn't want to learn. He believed that his methods helped create a better learning environment for students who were serious about their education.

Personal Life

Joe Clark was a father to three children who became successful athletes. His daughters, Joetta Clark Diggs and Hazel Clark, were Olympic track athletes. His son, J.J. Clark, became a track coach. He was also the father-in-law of Olympic track athlete Jearl Miles Clark.

In his later years, he lived in Newberry, Florida. Joe Clark passed away on December 29, 2020, at the age of 83, after a long illness.
