Career in Comedy
Stand-Up Comedy
Lycett started performing stand-up comedy in 2009. In the same year, he won the Chortle Student Comedian of the Year award. He is known for turning real-life situations into funny stories.
One of his most famous routines is about a parking ticket he got in the city of York in 2015. He had a long and funny exchange of emails with the city council about the ticket. He shared this story on the TV show 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, and it became a big hit with audiences.
In 2022, during a show in Belfast, a person in the audience called the police because they were offended by one of his jokes. The police investigated, but the case was quickly closed. Lycett found the situation amusing and was happy to share the joke again with the police.
Television Shows
Lycett has been a guest on many popular TV shows, including Would I Lie to You? and QI. He was also a contestant on the fourth series of Taskmaster.
The Great British Sewing Bee
In 2019, Lycett became the new host of the popular BBC Two show The Great British Sewing Bee. On the show, amateur sewers compete in different challenges to be named Britain's best home sewer.
Joe Lycett's Got Your Back
Lycett also hosts his own consumer rights show called Joe Lycett's Got Your Back. In the show, he helps ordinary people who have been treated unfairly by big companies. He uses humor and creative stunts to get justice for consumers. Lycett once described the show as a mix of Rogue Traders and RuPaul's Drag Race.
Travel Man
Since 2021, Lycett has hosted the Channel 4 show Travel Man. He took over from Richard Ayoade. In each episode, he travels to a different city for a 48-hour trip with a celebrity guest.
Famous Stunts and Activism
Changing His Name to Hugo Boss
In 2020, Lycett legally changed his name to Hugo Boss. He did this to protest the fashion company Hugo Boss, which was taking legal action against small businesses for using the word "Boss" in their names.
As part of his protest, Lycett held a fake fashion show outside the company's main store in London. He later changed his name back to Joe Lycett in April 2020.
Protesting Water Pollution
In 2023, Lycett launched a stunt to raise awareness about water pollution. He set up a large inflatable toilet at a dock in Liverpool and pretended to release fake sewage into the water.
He later revealed that the stunt was to draw attention to water companies releasing real sewage into rivers and seas. He made a Channel 4 special called Joe Lycett vs Sewage to investigate the problem.
Charity Work
In November 2023, Lycett raised over £50,000 for the homelessness charity Crisis. He did this after a government official made comments about homelessness. He posted a picture of a bowl of pot-pourri online and encouraged people to donate, turning a negative comment into a positive action.
