Joey's Early Life and School
Joey Altman grew up in a place called the Catskills in New York. His dad was a lawyer and a judge. His mom worked at a big hotel called Grossinger's.
When he was a kid, Joey dreamed of being many things. He wanted to be a magician, a stunt person, a musician, or an actor! He went to Sullivan County Community College in New York. There, he studied how to manage hotels and restaurants.
Joey's Cooking Career
Joey learned to cook from top chefs in France. He trained with Bernard Constantin in Lyon. He also worked with Jean Brouilly in Brittany. Later, he worked with Chef Bob Kinkaide in Massachusetts.
In 1985, Joey moved to New Orleans. He worked at a famous restaurant called Commander's Palace. He learned from Chef Emeril Lagasse there.
Cooking in San Francisco
In San Francisco, Joey worked for Chef Jeremiah Tower at restaurants like Stars and Taxi. He also cooked privately for the music promoter Bill Graham. In 1989, Joey opened his own restaurant. It was called Miss Pearl's Jam House. It was located in the Phoenix Hotel in San Francisco.
From 1999 to 2003, Joey owned and ran the Wild Hare Restaurant. It was in Menlo Park, California. For many years, he was a spokesperson for a wine company. Joey also helped open restaurants for others. He even helped open an award-winning restaurant in India. In 2017, he helped open China Live. This was a very big Chinese restaurant in San Francisco.
Joey on TV
Joey Altman has hosted several TV shows. On Food Network, he hosted "Appetite for Adventure." This show taught viewers how to cook outdoors while traveling. He also hosted "Tasting Napa," which was a travel show.
He was the host of "What's Cooking with Joey Altman." In 1998, he started "Bay Cafe." This show was very popular for a long time. It featured cooking demonstrations with guest chefs. These chefs came from all over the San Francisco Bay Area.
Teaching Cooking
Joey Altman loves to teach others how to cook. He has taught cooking classes all over the country. He is also a regular guest chef at Rancho La Puerta. This is a top spa resort in Mexico.

Joey Altman also enjoys playing the guitar. He plays blues music. He was a founding member of a band called "Back Burner Blues." This band was made up of chefs. They played music for many charity events from 2001 to 2018.
